Chemistry.com Review

Often used but rarely specifically defined, many people discuss hitting it off with the right partner as feeling a “chemistry” between them. It’s abstract, but yet you know it when you feel it. What makes it happen? What makes you feel it? Is it a touch or a look? A statement?

Or perhaps, it’s something less tangible. Perhaps chemistry is just something created when two people are driven to perceive things in a similar, or at least complementary fashion. And that’s what Chemistry.com gets at. A different profile from anything you’ve ever experienced on a dating site, Chemistry.com – a self-described sister site of Match.com - takes a more cognitive approach, where you analyze images, puzzles, etc. as part of the process. It’s not a game, but it is fun, and the site’s growth seems to indicate that it works.

What do I get from Chemistry.com?

A very detailed, and different, profile method. There are more than 50 questions from how you are with mechanical things to your desire to debate. Most of these are gauged by “agree, strongly agree, disagree or strongly disagree.” But there are some that test your analytical thinking…expand one hexagon to make it the size of another within 30 seconds, pick a title for a given picture. You can tell the site is really trying to figure out how your mind works, and that’s refreshing.

As the site is essentially a more scientific Match.com, your profile from Match.com can be automatically transferred. The site also guides paying members through a step-by-step introduction process where you select the questions and control the pace. What’s more, you can discontinue communications with any match at any time for any reason. To enhance privacy, only other paying members are able to initiate contact with you. Plus, your photo is revealed only when you’re comfortable doing so.

The site’s work is rooted in relationship expert Dr. Helen Fisher. An author who also hosts her own radio show on Sirius Satellite Radio, Fisher is referred to as a “biological anthropologist,” studying the science of human attraction. She contributes often to the site, be it articles or essays or just tidbits here and there.

Who’s on Chemistry.com?

The site provides no specific membership numbers, and the biggest criticism you will see elsewhere regarding the site is that the membership isn’t large (another undated review said membership is roughly 11,000 members, which is hard to believe given that Match.com has more than 8 million). You are e-mailed matches in batches of 5 as a free member, but you can’t browse until you’ve paid, which renders the free trial somewhat useless.

Summing up Chemistry.com!

The site’s argument is that sites such as EHarmony focus only on compatibility. Chemistry.com, this site argues, is just as much a part of the equation, and its profile is designed to make the abstractly considered “chemistry” become something tangible. The profile is actually fun to fill out and the site is easy to navigate. The members here are focused on the long term, so if you know that’s your focus, the scientific method alone is worth at least a short-term subscription to see if it meets your needs.
